Novato Mothers Club’s Annual Rummage Sale is a big deal for all. Clothes, toys, strollers, bedding and more are donated or sold through the event to help raise funds for NMC as well as making a little bit for the moms who sell. The committee for this event is made up of four fabulous moms who spend months planning, promoting and running the Sale- it takes quite a bit of preparation to pull something off that is this big. But first, we start with the night before at the Downtown Novato Recreation Center, where the committee, NMC co-directors and volunteers begin the setup:
Sellers and those who just wish to donate their wares drop off at the Rec Center. Then, the volunteers get busy sorting, folding, tagging, and overall quality control. There is a section for books, toys, strollers, and one huge section for clothing. We had maternity clothes, costumes, bathing wear, ski clothes, carriers, wraps and an enormous amount of clothing for the kids!
From the Rummage Sale Committee: Friday night set up ran very smoothly this year. We were able to book the center 2 hours prior to people dropping off and this allowed us to be fully prepared to merchandise everything as it came in. Our volunteers did a fantastic job organizing thousands of items in such a short period of time.
After many hours of sorting, we were ready for the big day! On Saturday, the Rummage Sale committee and NMC co-directors gather before opening the gates!
One thing to note about this year was that it marked the first time credit cards were allowed to be used in purchasing items.
The first two hours were absolutely packed! The line reached well into the adjoining room! This year we had close to 800 people pass through the sale purchasing a whopping 5053 items. Volunteers got to shop early at 8am, while the general public was invited to shop starting at 9am.
Though we sold a ton of stuff, we still had lots of goods leftover that was happily grabbed by our Community Outreach Shoppers. Each year we invite families in need from our community to shop for free at the end of the sale. This year we had families participate from Adopt A Family, Gilead House, Homeward Bound, Marin WIC, Marin Pregnancy Center, Home For All Marin, Novato Human Needs, Ritter Center and Center For Domestic Peace. Everything else that was left was given to Loved Twice and Goodwill.
The sale brought in $13,008, with $8759 going to the 67 members who sold and $4249 going the club. Of the money that went to the club we would like to thank everyone who donated items as we raised $381 from those donations alone.
In addition to shopping for great deals, NMC also offered a bake sale and the opportunity to join our group! Our bake sale was a huge success! We had 32 talented mamas bake everything from banana bread to brownies to cookies, which along with our cold drinks earned us $328. Thanks again, bakers!
We also had great sponsors on hand at the event, too. UrbanSitter (our platinum sponsor) had a table and donated 7 sitters for the event. Having sponsors has been a great way for the NMC to bring in additional income for our great events but also support our local businesses, many of which are mommy-owned. Please show your support and check out their websites and shop local! Our entire sponsor list included:
Capturing Grace Photography
Dr Banakus of Novato Pediatric Dentistry
Five Little Monkeys
Just Between Friends North Bay
Sing Dance Play Music Together
Baby Show Me a Sign
Powell’s Sweet Shoppe
St Francis Preschool
Suzi Eszterhas Wildlife Photography, LCC
We are so grateful to each and everyone of them for sponsoring this event!

We would also like to thank the co-directors Kristiina Bailey, Nina Vigarino, Danielle Addleman and Emilia Doro. All of whom worked with Rummage Sale Team Friday night for set up and all day Saturday for set up at 7am until the last task was finished at 5pm. We also wanted to thank Lauren Reed for her help at the end totaling up the registers and getting checks out to all our sellers.
